The Elbphilharmonie, affectionately known as "Elphi," dominates the Hamburg skyline. Its glass facade ripples like the waves of the Elbe below it. Whether you love the architecture or have mixed feelings, it's a must-visit. It's a stop on every major Hop-On Hop-Off route, and here is how to make the most of it.

Getting There

  • Bus Stop: Most tours have a dedicated "Elbphilharmonie" or "HafenCity" stop (usually stop #13 or #14 depending on the line).
  • The Walk: It’s a short walk from the bus drop-off to the main entrance. You can't miss it.
  • The Entrance: Head to the main entrance to access "The Tube."

The Tube & The Plaza

  • The Tube: This is an 82-meter curved escalator that transports you from the entrance to the Plaza. It’s an experience in itself, lined with sequins and light, designed so you can't see the end from the beginning.
  • The Plaza: Located 37 meters above ground, the Plaza is the public viewing deck sandwiched between the old brick warehouse base and the new glass structure.
  • The View: Walk the 360-degree outer walkway. You’ll see the harbor cranes, the city spires, the Michel, and the vast Elbe river.

Tickets & Access

  • Is it free? Yes, access to the Plaza is free.
  • Do I need a ticket? You need a ticket to pass the turnstiles. You can get a free ticket from the machines on-site if there is capacity.
  • Booking Ahead: On weekends or sunny days, capacity fills up. It's smart to book a viewing slot online for a small booking fee (€2-3) to skip the potential queue.

Architecture Highlights to Look For

  • The Glass: The facade consists of 1,100 stunning glass panels, each curved and printed with chrome dots to reflect the sky and water while protecting the interior from sun.
  • The Roof: A wave-like structure covered in white sequins (best seen from a distance or aerial photos).

Coffee & Concerts

You don't need a concert ticket to enjoy the building. There's a café/bar Deck & Deli on the Plaza level where you can enjoy coffee or a beer with a view. If you do want to see a concert in the Grand Hall, book months in advance—seats sell out instantly.

Pro Tip: Visit just before sunset. Watch the sun go down over the harbor and the city lights turn on from the Plaza. Then, hop back on the bus (check the last bus time!) or take a ferry from the adjacent pier.
