Visitors to Hamburg often face a choice between various tourist passes. Should you buy the official Hamburg CARD or a Hop-On Hop-Off (HoHo) ticket? They serve different purposes and fit different travel styles.

1. The Hamburg CARD

  • What it is: A ticket for unlimited public transport (HVV - bus, train, harbor ferry) PLUS discounts (up to 50%) at 150+ attractions.
  • Cost: Starts around €11.90 per day (group tickets available).
  • Pros: Cheapest way to get around if you are comfortable using public transit. Good discounts on museums.
  • Cons: No commentary. You must navigate yourself using maps/apps. You miss the "sightseeing" drive-by experience. Not a direct door-to-door service for tourists.

2. The Hop-On Hop-Off Ticket

  • What it is: A ticket specifically for the red sightseeing buses.
  • Cost: Starts around €18-20 per day.
  • Pros: Guided commentary (learn while you ride). Takes you directly to tourist spots without needing to figure out the U-Bahn map. Excellent views from the top deck. Effortless.
  • Cons: More expensive than public transit alone. Slower than the subway for getting across town quickly.

3. The "Hamburg Turbopass"

There is a third option: The all-inclusive passes that might include both free entry to museums and transport. These are much more expensive (starting €50+) and only worth it if you plan to visit many paid attractions.

Which one is right for you?

  • The "Explorer" (Active): Get the Hamburg CARD. Use the public ferries (Line 62) for a cheap "harbor cruise" and the subway to get around fast. You don't mind walking a bit from stations.
  • The "Relaxed Tourist": Get the HoHo Ticket. If you don't want to decipher subway maps and want to be driven to the front door of the Elbphilharmonie while listening to history, this is worth the extra euros.
  • The Compromise: Many HoHo tickets give you a discount on museums too, similar to the card. Check the specific provider's brochure!

Summary

  • Hamburg Card = Transport + Discounts.
  • HoHo = Transport + Tour Guide + Views.
