How to best experience Hamburg's Speicherstadt. Compare views from the street level bus tour and the canal level boat cruise.

The Speicherstadt (City of Warehouses) is arguably Hamburg's most atmospheric district. Built between 1883 and 1927, this neo-gothic red-brick complex stands on oak piles and is crisscrossed by canals (Fleete). It’s a place of contrasts, best understood by seeing it from both land and water.
Riding the Hop-On Hop-Off bus through the Speicherstadt offers a sense of scale and architectural grandeur.
This is where the magic happens. A Barkasse (small barge) ride through the canals is essential for the full experience.
We recommend doing both.
Photo Tip: The "Wasserschloss" (Water Castle) is the most photographed building, sitting on a peninsula between two canals. It looks great from the Poggenmühlen-Brücke bridge, but seeing it from the water allows for unique angles.
