Locals say: "There is no bad weather, only wrong clothing." But when the "Schietwetter" (crappy weather) hits—which happens often in Hamburg—you want to be dry. Here is why the Hop-On Hop-Off bus is your best friend in the rain.

The Bus is Dry (and Warm)

The double-decker buses have sliding roofs. In seconds, the open top becomes a warm, glass-encased viewing gallery. You can see the sights without getting a drop on you. It's much more pleasant than walking with an umbrella that gets turned inside out by the wind!

Top Indoor Stops to Escape the Rain

  1. Miniatur Wunderland: You can spend 4-5 hours here easily. It's a world unto itself and completely indoors. Book tickets in advance!
  2. Hamburg Dungeon: Scares, history, and indoor rides. Perfect for teenagers.
  3. International Maritime Museum: Nine decks of maritime history in a converted warehouse. You can lose yourself for hours here.
  4. Chocoversum: A chocolate museum where you can make your own bar. Tasty, warm, and smells amazing.
  5. Elbphilharmonie Plaza: While the balcony is outside, the inside area is sheltered, and the views through the glass are moody and dramatic in the rain.
  6. Europa Passage: A massive shopping mall near the Rathaus stop if you just want to shop and eat.

Boat Tours in Rain?

Yes! The large passenger ships and many barges have covered, heated cabins with large windows. The rain pattering on the glass while you cruise through a grey, misty harbor is incredibly atmospheric and cozy ("gemütlich").

Survival Tips

  • Gear: Bring a sturdy umbrella (the wind can be strong). Wear waterproof shoes.
  • Cafe Culture: Embrace the "Gemütlichkeit" of a cafe. Stop for a hot chocolate or coffee with a Franzbrötchen (cinnamon pastry) while waiting for the next bus.
  • Plan B: Keep an indoor activity (like a museum) as a backup for your afternoon plan.
