Which Hamburg harbor cruise should you choose? We review large passenger ships vs. small barges (Barkassen) and help you decide.

You cannot say you've visited Hamburg without seeing it from the water. The Port of Hamburg is the second busiest in Europe, a massive industrial spectacle that is surprisingly beautiful. But not all boat tours are the same. Here's a breakdown to help you choose the right one for your style.
These are larger, multi-deck vessels often with onboard catering.
These flat, smaller boats are the icon of Hamburg's harbor.
If you can, take a Barkasse. The experience of gliding through the narrow brick canyons of the Warehouse District and then suddenly facing a 400-meter-long container ship is unforgettable and unique to Hamburg.
Important Note on Tides: The Speicherstadt is tidal. If the water is too high (high tide/storm surge) or too low, even the barges can't enter the canals. The captains will usually announce the route before departure.
